It moves through four cases: Helen Keller at the wellhouse discovering that everything has a name, Maurice Merleau-Ponty's claim that speech is not the translation of a finished thought but the act in which the thought completes itself, a blunt audit showing English holds tens of thousands of words for the parts of a car and roughly 300 to 1,000 for human emotion, and a full family history of the word truth. That last chapter traces three unrelated ancestries welded into one syllable: Proto-Indo-European deru meaning firm and solid by way of the tree, Greek aletheia meaning unconcealment, and Latin veritas from the Roman courtroom, with the modern correspondence sense hardening in the 1500s and 1600s alongside print, contracts and the Scientific Revolution. The conclusion is not that reality is merely linguistic but that language discovers and creates in the same motion, which is why the film ends demanding new words rather than better ones.
