The GREATEST Archaeological Discoveries of 2026 (So Far)

A 96 minute run through the twelve biggest archaeological stories of the first half of 2026, from a lost city Alexander the Great founded on the Tigris to 13,000 inscribed potsherds carrying a thousand years of one Egyptian town's paperwork. Half the finds came out of the ground by hand: 22 coffins of the Singers of Amun with their mummies still inside, a giant owl at the center of a Zapotec tomb, three chests of antique figurines under the Aztec great temple, and the first near complete Celtic war horn ever found in Britain. The other half never involved a shovel, including a drowned North Sea forest reconstructed from seabed DNA, the oldest plague genome ever recovered, and a habitat connectivity model that reframes why the Neanderthals disappeared. Several of them move dates the field thought were settled, most dramatically wooden tool use, which jumps back 100,000 years to a hillside in Greece. The narration stays close to what each team actually claimed and says out loud where the questions remain open.
