2:08:50Socrates: The First Philosopher Full Documentary For Sleep
A two hour narrated life of Socrates that opens with the hemlock and then goes back seventy years to explain how a stone worker's son ended up drinking it. The spine is that this was not a tyrant's execution: 500 Athenians chosen by lot convicted him 280 to 220 for impiety and corrupting the youth, then voted 360 to 140 for death after he proposed free meals at the Prytaneum as his penalty. It rebuilds the elenchus as a working demonstration (a general on courage, a wealthy man on justice, a sophist destroyed in front of his own prospective students), the war and the Thirty Tyrants that made him a target, the thirty day reprieve that produced the Crito and the Phaedo, and the death scene beat by beat. Then it follows what survived him through Plato, the Stoics, Justin Martyr, Erasmus, Montaigne, Voltaire, Nietzsche, Popper, Arendt and King, and ends by admitting that the man himself is unrecoverable because he wrote nothing on principle.
