Fall Asleep to the ENTIRE Story of Charles Darwin — The Man Behind Evolution | Modern History

A one hour fifty minute bedtime narration that walks the whole life of Charles Darwin, from his birth in Shrewsbury on 12 February 1809 to his burial in Westminster Abbey on 26 April 1882. It follows the abandoned medical studies at Edinburgh, the beetle mania at Cambridge, the five year voyage of HMS Beagle leg by leg, the Patagonian fossils and the Concepcion earthquake, the Galapagos, and John Gould's 1837 verdict on the finches that turned the whole thing over. Then the twenty year silence: the 1842 pencil sketch, the 1844 essay written with instructions to publish it only after his death, eight years spent on barnacles, and the death of his daughter Annie. It ends with Wallace's letter from Ternate, the joint Linnean Society reading of 1 July 1858 that nobody noticed, On the Origin of Species, the Oxford clash between Huxley and Wilberforce, and the quiet later books on orchids, climbing plants and earthworms.

Cyrus absorbing Media rather than destroying it, Darius carving his version of events into a cliff at Behistun, Alexander burning Persepolis, the Parthian horse archers who annihilated Crassus at Carrhae, Shapur I capturing a live Roman emperor, Khosrow I welcoming the philosophers Justinian expelled from Athens, the Arab conquest, Ferdowsi, the Mongols, Isfahan, Nader Shah, the Great Game, 1953, 1979, and Woman Life Freedom. The argument underneath it is one question asked in the first thirty seconds: how does a land conquered by Greeks, Arabs, Turks and Mongols never actually disappear? The answer he keeps landing on is administrative rather than romantic, because every foreign dynasty ended up governing the plateau in Persian.

It walks every move in order: Verrocchio's workshop in Florence, the 1482 letter to Ludovico Sforza that sold him to Milan as a military engineer, the bronze horse whose metal went to cannon, the Last Supper on a wall he prepared wrong, the French invasion of 1499, the Battle of Anghiari that ran down the wall in the summer heat, the anatomical dissections, the Vitruvian Man, the Mona Lisa he never delivered, Rome under Leo X, and the last three years at Clos Lucé under Francis I. Then it keeps going, following Francesco Melzi's bundles labeled on water, on the body, on motion, on light as they scatter across Europe and resurface as the Codex Atlanticus, Arundel, Madrid and Leicester. Written to be fallen asleep to, so it circles back over its own ground, telling the Florence return, the Mona Lisa and the death twice each in slower and fuller versions.
